The national basketball league announced the addition of two new franchise teams ahead of the upcoming season, expanding the competition and increasing opportunities for young players to turn professional.

League organisers say the expansion reflects growing interest in the sport, particularly among younger fans following recent successes by Nigerian players on international stages.

“Basketball is one of the fastest-growing sports here, and this expansion is a natural next step,” a league official said.

The new teams will be based in previously unrepresented cities, with trials for local talent scheduled over the coming weeks. Season fixtures are expected to be released next month.
